This delightful acrylic painting was painted by Hadari, an African Elephant who lives currently at the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere in Tennessee. There is a full description of the life of Hadari on the back of this 2002 painting she did. I was very surprised to learn that the elephants at the Nashville Zoo heave learned over 60 verbal commands. Hadari was born in 1982 in South Africa. This is an obvious one-of-a-kind painting that she did.
Three African elephant ladies lived there and created paintings that were sold in the zoo gift shop. Hadari’s art was instantly recognizable of the three. The other elephants painted in angular zig-zags, but Hadari’s strokes were rounded and softer.
We have learned that Hadari had passed away at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee early in 2017 at the age of 36. Though it made me sad, I loved reading online that her last two years were filled with other elephant friends and relative freedom.
